Annotation

This paper critically evaluates and rejects recent objections to the DIRECT ACCESS VIEW in psycholinguistic research which states that, given sufficient context, people understand nonliteral meanings without analyzing the complete literal meaning of an expression. It nevertheless argues that other research suggests how people analyze aspects of a speaker's utterance as part of inferring what speakers implicate.
