Annotation
Adopting the new 'zero particle' approach to particle omission in spoken Japanese noun phrases, this study demonstrates two main properties of the zero particle, namely a grammatical function, by which the speaker specifies objects/events without referring to other objects/events and an expressive effect. It further examines the motivation of the frequent use of zero particles in spoken language and the relation between formality and the zero particle.
