Annotation

This paper presents a unitary account of the Japanese discourse connective DAKARA, in which the notion of interpretive resemblance, related to relevance theory, plays a crucial role. It is argued that the introduction of a reformulation of another utterance or assumption, is the most fundamental function of DAKARA. Furthermore the analysis of English reformulation markers (such as IN OTHER WORDS) and discourse connectives (such as SO/THEREFORE) leads M. to the proposition of analyzing DAKARA as encoding procedural information which instructs the hearer to identify representations which interpretively resemble the introduced utterance.
