Pointing to some problems in Grice's theory of implicatures, this paper proposes to ground the calculation of implicatures in Greimas' model of narrative. On the basis of a semio-narrative approach to indirectness and Sanders' model of calculated speech, the general mechanisms of implicatures can be operationalized by using schemata for explaining universal forms of narratives.
