This paper demonstrates that frequently used discourse markers like the Australian BLOODY have their own precise meaning which can be revealed by means of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage and which provides important clues to both changes and continuity in values, attitudes and interaction modes characteristic of a given speech community or society.
