This paper uses the news interview, a virtual laboratory of question design, to examine the properties of negative interrogatives. As Bolinger's claim that negative interrogatives are equivalent in conduciveness to positive assertions with negative tags is shown to be incorrect, it is suggested to handle the two formats differently in terms of assertiveness.
