This article investigates alignment in the course of disagreement in the multiperson interaction of committee meetings. It demonstrates the design of dissenting and alignment turns and discusses four main tasks accomplished by alliances: besides their use in correction of statements and adjustment or moderation of a categorical one-sided stance, alliances are formed in decision-making situations and they can be rewarding for the participants a a social activity.
