Annotation

This analysis demonstrates a dispreference for expressing noncomprehension in a US graduate seminar, as students delay explicit admission, offer an account of attempted understanding and appeal for group understanding. The practices used to express noncomprehension include the speakers' novice status, their transitional identity as practitioners in the making and their role as individual achievers within a situation of collaboration.
