Using recorded native speech, and Goffman's notion of face as reformulated by Brown and Levinson, this paper examines two main manifestations of Persian ritual politeness, i.e. offers and expressions of thanks, and shows how considerations for both aspects of Persian face, namely pride and honor, and for both interlocutors, shape polite Persian communication.
