Annotation

This paper which contrasts ritual enquiries about another's well-being in Iranian and German telephone conversation openings, demonstrates how the ritual 'how are you' sequence is expanded in Iranian conversations into an inquiry about the well-being of the respective families, whilst Germans often do not include the ritual 'how are you', and if they do, this inquiry is not reciprocated but serves as topic elicitation.
