Annotation

This study crosslinguistically examines semantic false friends which have different, yet still linked meanings in different languages, links which can be based on metaphor, metonymy, euphemism, generalization and specialization. This exercise in diachronic pragmatics also has important implications for crosslinguistic communication and translation as it helps to avoid misunderstandings and mistranslations and contributes to cognitive semantics.
