This contribution to the understanding of Quechua's evidential system, demonstrates that the MI-suffix encodes two paradigmatic contrasts, a modal one and an evidential one. Given this patterning and the (non)use of MI in various speech types, it is argued that Pastaza Quechua speakers do not share Euro-Americans' concern for distinguishing between "truths" and "vivid truths".
