This study investigates the development of Modern Written Chinese in the modernizing Chinese society of the 20th century, especially its sources of influence, emergent lexical and grammatical norms and variations in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, as well as the role of language planning and a comparison with the Western European process towards a non-diglossic community.
