Annotation
This book examines the social uses and meanings of Anglo-American (US, UK, Canada) community writing. Though school writing is not the focus, school plays an important role because it controls access to high-status forms of writing and to material and social goods. This study frames a social and ideological perspective on literacy which requires rethinking of earlier definitions of literacy and the goals of schooling.
