Annotation

The main goal of this book is to introduce French feminist theory to non-French speakers. It offers some interesting views on the area of language and inequality dealing with 'muted' groups and hegemonic discourse and their relationship to gender. The discussion on how meaning is conveyed in literary and poetic language ties in with challenges to traditional accounts of the nature of meaning in language. The work also questions the assumption that, if sexes use language differently, this is to be explained completely by sociocultural factors.
