Annotation

African cultures traditionally gave their children meaningful names, pointing to a range of people or circumstances relevant at the child's birth. This paper examines change in Zulu naming practices as a reflection of wider social change. Contemporary names are shown to differ from traditional ones and there are quantitative and qualitative differences in naming practices in rural, farm, and urban settings.
