This study examines the complex of power relations and negotiations involved in research, thus contributing to a better understanding of the factors that facilitate or hinder a more democratic research mode. Three of the four case studies examine language use and attitudes among British youngsters who in two cases are also members of a non-Anglo minority. The fourth study discusses the experience of a white woman studying language behavior among Peruvian Andes bilingual peasants.
