Annotation

This initial publication of a manuscript version of S. Douglas's (1743-1823) work on the provincial Scottish dialect constitutes an interesting contribution to the knowledge of the socio(linguistic) situation in 18th century Britain. As D. considered it a social and a civic necessity to conform to upper-class London linguistic norms, he wrote this book in an attempt to aid the Scottish people in correcting their 'defect' pronunciation.
