Annotation

This paper investigates the fact that the 1989 Central European revolutions were phrased in European key political concepts of freedom and democracy in spite of decades of Communist attempts to redefine these terms by using Orwellian 'doublethink'. The explanation of this Communist failure includes de Saussure's idea that language is a crucially social, interlinked sytem and emphasizes the important role of early language learning in the development of the adult system.
