This book re-examines the history of French language in the light of contemporary sociolinguistic theory. Chapter I contrasts French notions of language variation with contemporary linguistic models. Chapters II and III discuss the Latinization of Gaul and introduce the history of language standardization in France. Chapters IV to VII deal with the different steps in this standardization process. A concluding chapter addresses linguistic variation in contemporary France.
