Besides an overview of the standard literature on politeness, this work offers a corpus-based analysis of politeness phenomena in British English and in Greek. The 6 main chapters deal with the following issues: classic contributions to the theories of politeness and verbal interaction; the universality controversy concerning the concept of face; the acquisition of politeness and the relation between politeness and formality; the speech act properties of requests; and a comparative analysis of requests in English and Greek culture.
