This study treats Singaporean English (SE), referred to as a "non-native variety", with the methodologies of Labov and Bickerton. 100 SE speakers, classified according to educational attainment, are given a score for realization of linguistic variables. To solve some problems posed by the quantitative analysis of syntactic variables, P. compares the SE results with a "prescriptive native speaker standard".
