Annotation
This paper discusses how unofficial forces in the 1990s push toward linguistic reconciliation -in casu Mandarin-dialect bilingualism- across Greater China (the People's Republic, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore), negotiated via the previously stigmatized southern dialects. These forces include: compromises regarding the writing system, increasing pride in local culture, the economic boom on the south coast and geopolitical factors.
