This study explores language diversity, nation building and the lack of language policies in West Africa. The introduction and the first chapters discuss terms and problems associated with the study of sociolinguistic patterns, distinguishing between "vertical" and "horizontal" multilingualism. Chapter IV is concerned with European colonization and its great impact on multilingualism. The following chapters deal with government dilemmas regarding language diversity. The conclusion indicts language policy deficiency in many contemporary West African states.
