Annotation

This is an important volume for the study of African-American English and for sociolinguistics, though in the latter case explicit attention is limited to a specific theoretical controversy polarized in the conflict between divergence and convergence hypotheses. Part I presents the tape-recorded speech of African-American ex-slaves, registered between 1935 and 1974. Part II consists of articles which reflect the views of various scholars on evolutionary trends in Black English.
