Annotation

This volume which focuses on register and style in sociolinguistics, includes two major theoretical contributions, one by the authors, involving a contentious association between linguistic forms and social stratification, and one by Rickford and McNair-Knox, promoting style research and lamenting its neglect in American sociolinguistics. The book also deals with terminological issues, and emphasizes some of the views of B., such as the importance of feature co-occurence for indexing style and of using equivalent levels of generality in register comparisons.
