Annotation

This book reports upon the author's recommendations regarding the reshaping of the applied linguistics curriculum at the Witwatersrand University of Johannesburg and his experiences and observatons during a seven-week graduate seminar. Unfamiliar with the South African setting, committed to learner-centered education, he disregards cultural differences in attitudes toward teaching and learning and teachers' concerns regarding failing classroom education. Important issues are raised though regarding language policy issues, such as which English to teach in schools, the role of English and African languages and the need for standards in L2 teaching.
