This conversation analytic study of children's neighborhood play activities in cross-sex and age-mixed groupings, focusing on endogenous social organization, reveals the cultural depth and structural complexity of fantasy play encounters, and the deficiency of the traditional view considering them as less complex than competitive games and sports.
