Annotation

This book investigates gender-related power dynamics in American and German university professors' directives -requirements, proceedings and intentions- towards their students, in the context of the first day of classes. It is shown that male speakers display more authority, but the difference is smaller in the US than in Germany. There is a gap though between the former (1988) and the latter (1980-1981) data collection.
