This book, divided into three principal sections, deals with the origins of Ancient Greek literacy and the introduction of the alphabet and its place in a previously oral society (1); addresses the alliance of literacy and law (2); and discusses at lenght the alliance of literacy and education, particularly in the light of Plato's criticisms (3).
