This volume, divided into three sections, constitutes a language-oriented introduction to ethnic and gender issues in communication in the United States. The first section offers a theoretical background with respect to the relationship between speech and community. The second section provides overviews of language and gender and of the African American, Hispanic and Asian American ethnic communities. The third section discusses the consequences of linguistic and cultural diversity and language policy designed to cope with this diversity.
