This paper adopts a sociolinguistic, ethnographic and pragmatic approach to the study of Nigerian military coup speeches as discourse. These speeches, situated in an unusual interaction context, aim at creating some measure of cooperation with the invisible contra-coup audience, whose reactions are normally unpredictable.
