This paper focuses on the ways speakers in narratives embody their views of reported-speaker attitudes, viz. the latter's mental positions and feelings at the time of the quoted speech and its original expression. It is shown that the nontemporal use of the reporting-verb tense serves to introduce dialogue-external features that reflect reported-speaker attitudes.
