Annotation

This paper demonstrates that lawyers in a courtroom use style shifting to imply things the court protocol doesn't allow to say directly. When style switching is employed to characterize an individual, the style indexes him/her -be it the speaker or another person-, to a role relationship within the speech event and within society at large.
