This paper contends the Gumperzian approach of tracing miscommunication to culture-specific contextualization conventions. Successful interpretation is situated within discursive practice, which allows a balanced participation that can incorporate various cultural 'styles'. The analyzed data consist of taped conversations between U.S. English native speakers and Japanese nonnative speakers of English.
