This paper investigates the construction of ethnic identity, cultural attributions and cultural differences at the level of research practice and theory formation. It criticizes the emphasis on cultural differences at the expense of other factors in explaining intercultural miscommunication and suggests to situate the intercultural interaction in its societal and institutional context.
