Annotation

This paper deals with nineteenth-century, colonial representations of African languages and of Africans through linguistic evidence. Besides the use of family and gender imagery, these studies emphasize grammatical gender distinctions, considering them as the basis of relationships with other languages and as revealing a speaker's mentality and socio-political condition.
