Replacing the back channel (Yngve, 1970) with an acknowledgment token perspective of turn taking (Jefferson, 1983/1993), this paper examines the effects of three acknowledgment tokens -yeah, mm hm, and uh huh- on speakership incipiency and posttoken turns.
