A number of predication-expression discrepancies in Portuguese are discussed. Two topics are focused upon: (i) the fact that the subject may occur either preverbally or postverbally; and (ii) the various possible constructions with the Portuguese verb 'parecer' (to seem) are studied. In both cases, the explanation crucially depends on the notion of 'topic'.
