Drawing on Fishman's model (1985), this study aims at identifying factors which accelerate and inhibit language shift in the new Zealand context, by examining processes of language shift and maintenance in the three main non-English speaking immigrant communities, i.e. the Tongan, the Greek and the Chinese.
