This article critically assesses the functional hypothesis that interlanguage efficiently conveys referential information. It provides a review of previous evaluations of the hypothesis, a description of two studies on the English interlanguage of native Chinese and Czech/Slovac speaking learners and a discussion of repair options. It is argued that early interlanguage is an inadequate means of communicating referential information.
