Annotation

This paper examines written apologies of deaf learners of English as a second language. A certain bluntness of responses and a discrepancy between written responses and subjective assessments of situation severity are attributed to the students' learner status. The routinized feel to the apologies is at least partly attributable to the influence of American Sign Language. Strategy choices are shown to reflect individual and culture-specific offense assessments.
