This paper deals with criticisms of discourse analysis and in particular with the uncertain relation between discourse and grammar. It offers a comparative analysis of grammatical patterns across two textbooks and a small text corpus and considers the relationship between textual, syntactic and ideological analysis and descriptive methods.
