This paper challenges some common assumptions on the nature and purpose of theory construction in second language acquisition (SLA), focusing on a deeper layer of underlying questions that adresses issues as: SLA-definitions; theory-practice relations; SLA-theory and educational theory; the nature of understanding; and the moral foundations of scientific practice.
