Drawing on Peirce's semiotic theory of relations, this paper proposes to expand the theory of traditionally recognized content and formal schemata to incorporate general and abstract schemata. Empirical research confirms the superiority of abstract schemata over formal and (those in turn) over content schemata in relation to active interpretations of narrative representations.
