This relational analysis compares and contrasts a native British undergraduate student's writing performance in examination and coursework (essay writing) conditions, pointing to causes of the inadequate handling of source materials in essay writing. The results are related to the knowledge-telling and knowledge-transforming writing models of Bereiter and Scardamalia's (1987).
