A discussion - in the neo-Firthian tradition - of some interrelations between 'formal meaning' (i.e. the meaning of a piece of language with respect to its internal patterning) and 'contextual meaning' (i.e. its meaning with respect to the correspondences that can be set up between its internal patternings and relevant non-linguistic patterns in its general situation).
