Annotation

This paper proposes to evaluate three hierarchically related hypotheses on whether global inferences routinely accompany text comprehension. The near causal hypothesis states that readers only infer causal connections among nearby text ideas. The coherence hypothesis adds that readers may detect causal connections among distant text ideas when the text is locally incoherent. The global hypothesis advances that distant causal connections can be inferrred even if the text is locally coherent.
