Annotation

This paper explores Warlpiri nicknaming in Warlpiri or English, bestowed on Warlpiri and non-Aboriginal residents of Lajamanu (Australian Northern Territory), in and outside classroom settings. They can imply criticism, be humorous or merely descriptive, refer to desirable personal attributes and to eating habits. Nicknames for non-aboriginal teachers illustrate some linguistic revenge of the powerless on the powerful.
