Annotation

This paper compares and contrasts the social function of Polish and Norwegian standard varieties. Whilst the Polish standard has a high social status and is generally taken for granted, thus constituting a prototypically focused language, Norway has two competing written standards symbolizing cultural, political and geographical contrasts, which points to a quite diffuse linguistic situation.
